Michael Vick’s Dog Fighting

Professional football player Michael Vick had an investigation launched against him that begun in 2007 for suspicion of dog fighting. After the discovery of a dog fighting ring over 50 dogs were seized from his property. Most of these dogs were pit bulls. Michael Vick was suspended from the NFL and had to pay back a portion of his salary. He also lost many endorsement deals.

This year marks the seventh year since these dogs were freed.  As sad of a beginning that they had, many are now rehabilitated and living normally. The rehabilitation was not an easy process. Once the dogs were seized many thought that these dogs were hopeless, and past the point of being saved. The dogs that were taken from Michael Vick’s dog fighting ring suffered horrific abuse that they didn’t deserve to endure. Best Friends Animal Society from Utah disagreed that these dogs were past saving. They took in 22 of the dogs from the fighting ring and they are now known as the “Vick-tory Dogs.”

Here are 3 of the 22 success stories of the dogs saved:

o-CHERRY-900

1. Cherry Garcia was adopted in 2010 by a loving family. He loves to play with the families other dog, as well as two cats. His family has a newborn baby girl who he loves to cuddle with. Cherry Garcia’s owner Paul said, “This is a dog that had chemicals poured on his back, forced to fight for his life, and flat-out tortured, yet he keeps moving forward, he doesn’t have a rearview mirror. He doesn’t look at himself as a victim, he looks at himself as a survivor.”

o-DAN-900

2. Handsome Dan was adopted in 2009. He was rescued by a loving family and loves children. Since his adoption the family created, Handsome Dan’s Rescue for Pit Bull Type Dogs. His owner Heather said, “Dan helped me find my purpose in life. He’s my best friend. I always joke I don’t travel without him. Through learning to be better for him, it has made me better professionally and a better person.”

o-OSCAR-900

3. Oscar was adopted in 2012 and his owner Rachel said he is a total couch potato. Rachel his owner said she loves to see his tail wag and he has taught her so much about acceptance, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

Each of these 22 dogs saved have such inspiring stories about love and hope. Thanks to Best Friends Animal Society they were given the second chance they deserved. Without this rescue who knows what the outcome would have been for these dogs. What do you think about the dogs saved? Do you think Michael Vick should have been charged stricter? I personally think that Michael Vick should not be allowed to play in the NFL anymore.
